It is true that one is related to the <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><b>neurological system<\/b><\/span> whereas the other is related to the <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><b>digestive system<\/b><\/span>, but actually they appear to be closer than what we might think.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past years, much has been said about \u201cmigraine triggering foods\u201d although it is important to nuance this concept. <b><span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\">Some people are predisposed to suffer from migraine because they have an underactive intestinal enzyme which consequently doesn\u2019t properly expel a molecule found in many food, therefore causing its accumulation in our organism<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Having said this, I\u2019d like to point out that the food is not to blame in this case, the problem resides in the metabolic disorder that people suffer from.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the last 5 years the causes of this neurological symptom have been under investigation. Recently results situated the root of this metabolic disorder in the small bowel. Some people have low levels of <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>Diamine Oxidase (DAO) enzyme activity<\/strong><\/span>, caused either by pathological, genetically or pharmacological factors.<\/p>\n<h3>The importance of food and diet to treat migraine<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Food plays a very important role in the treatment of this deficiency, as people with low enzyme activity:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Won\u2019t be able to successfully eliminate <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>Histamine<\/strong><\/span> (a molecule found in many food), which, in excessive amounts, causes vasodilatation of temporal arteries (the start of migraine).<\/li>\n<li>Besides food rich in histamine, in patients with low DAO activity, the high intake of foods rich in other amines such as <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>putrescine and cadaverine<\/strong><\/span> can trigger DAO saturation, avoiding it to degrade ingested histamine properly.<\/li>\n<li>Should control the food that <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>release histamine from our own cells<\/strong><\/span>, similar to an immunological response (but without being it).<\/li>\n<li>Should reduce the intake of <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>DAO blocking food<\/strong><\/span>, such as alcohol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>dietetic treatment<\/strong><\/span> for migraine caused by a <span style=\"color: #ff99cc;\"><strong>DAO deficiency<\/strong><\/span>, is complex, it is divided in several stages and it includes lots of aspects.
